Will ‘The Golden Girls’ House Be Renovated Next on Reality TV? A Reality Check

Now that “The Brady Bunch” house has been remodeled and celebrated in all its original glory on “A Very Brady Renovation,” the top brass at HGTV must be wondering: What iconic sitcom house should they try renovating next?

If the stars of “Property Brothers,” Drew and Jonathan Scott, have anything to say about it, it could be the house from “The Golden Girls.” On a recent episode of “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” the Scott brothers, who helped renovate the “Brady Bunch” residence, revealed that they’d love to turn their remodeling efforts toward the home of spunky seniors Blanche, Rose, Dorothy, and Sophia, who graced our TV screens from 1985 to 1992.

“So, we’re thinking next, ‘The Golden Girls’ house,” said Drew, as the audience cheered. Clarkson approved, too.

But how realistic is it to renovate this place? Where is it, and what shape is it in? Allow us to fill you in.

‘The Golden Girls’ house: A reality check

Let’s start with the basics: Like “The Brady Bunch” house, the interior of “The Golden Girls” home was just a studio set in Hollywood. As for the home’s exterior shots, those were filmed on location—and although the house was billed as being located at 6151 Richmond St. in Miami, no such address actually exists.

So where’s the house, then? At 245 N. Saltair Ave. in Los Angeles.

At least, that’s how it was in the beginning. Later on, a façade of the house was built in Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios in Florida. Guests could even visit the set as a part of a tram tour of “Residential Street.” Alas, in 2003, this street was torn down to make room for a stunt show. All that remains today is the original house in L.A.

As for what this house is like behind its facade, this four-bedroom, four-bath, 2,901-square-foot house was built in 1955. But beyond that, it’s hard to say what’s going on in there, since the house has remained a private residence since long before “The Golden Girls” ever aired. Sure, die-hard fans may do drive-bys and snap selfies in front of the house, but anything beyond that could be seen as trespassing, so watch out!

How much is ‘The Golden Girls’ house worth?

Since the house isn’t on the market, there’s no way of knowing how much the owners would ask for it. In the neighborhood of Brentwood, where this home is located, the median list price hovers around $2,695,000. And, based on tax assessment records and recent sale prices of comparable properties, some estimates of the home’s value run as high as $4,671,300. Chalk it up to the “Golden Girls” markup.

However, California-based real estate developer Tyler Drew is dubious that it would sell for that much.

“Even in a hot market, with the house’s reputation, that’s a hard pill to swallow,” he says. “Furthermore, sales of lower-end luxury real estate have been plateauing as of late in L.A.”

What it would take to renovate ‘The Golden Girls’ house

But what about the condition of the house? Of course, the layout of the real house is probably very different from what we saw on the TV show, but there’s the question of upkeep, too. Is the house in good condition?

Drew explains that the home’s profile online shows no renovations since it was built in 1955. In short, it could be falling apart.

But even if the house is in bad shape, the cost of simply renovating an older house is far different from the cost of renovating a house to conform with the specifications of one of America’s favorite homes.

“If it’s preservation you are looking at, the price for construction probably goes significantly higher,” Drew points out, “as many fixtures in the house that need refurbishment are no longer manufactured.”

There’s also the cost of potentially changing the layout, and even constructing an addition to match the set, as had to be done for “A Very Brady Renovation.”

Just as in “A Very Brady Renovation,” the HGTV team would have to create the memorable backyard for this home.

Another problem that plagued the Brady renovation, and that would certainly prove challenging yet again, is finding the right furnishings and decor to match a decades-old show. Just think of everything hanging on the wall in that kitchen, and how many hours HGTV staff would spend rummaging through antique shops to find them. They’d probably have to custom-create a lot of things to get the right print on those couch cushions, or match the wallpaper.

Yet, all things considered, if the team could do it for the Brady House, duplicating “The Golden Girls” house sounds difficult, but not impossible. Where there are fans, HGTV will find a way.

As of now, there are no official plans to renovate “The Golden Girls” home, but we certainly wouldn’t be surprised if it happens. Let’s just say that if the residents at 245 N. Saltair hope to move any time soon, odds are, they’ll have plenty of offers.
