The Week’s Hottest Living Room Looks on Instagram Are Swanky and Sophisticated

Since we spend so much time in it, our living room can easily become a messy catch-all that includes old magazines, worn-out sofas, and dusty coffee tables (and let’s not forget about last week’s take-out napkins).

So it’s understandable if you take a look around, sigh in disgust, and promise yourself that now is finally the time you’ll up your game. But where to start? Luckily, we’ve done the hard work for you.

As we do every week, we scrolled through hundreds of decor posts on Instagram to uncover the most-liked living room looks—and what we found is that the posts with the most hearts show off sophisticated decor that raises the bar for living rooms everywhere.

These looks might seem ambitious for an amateur, but they’re not hard to pull off—as long as you know what to buy. And hey, we’ve done the heavy lifting there, too! Ready to swap out your tired, old living room decor for something fresh on Instagram’s trendiest list? Keep scrolling.

Handcarved wood furniture has been a trend for quite some time, but by far and away one of the most unique ways to incorporate this look into your home is with a piece like this one, as seen in the home of @huizedop (reposted by @homeaura)—that actually still looks like a tree.

“This trend is one of my favorites,” says interior designer Michael Helwig. “It’s popular because it’s versatile, and natural elements look amazing in a myriad of interior design styles—adding a whimsical touch that’s unexpected.”

Black & white photo expos

Black and white photography is as timeless as it gets, and will instantly level-up your living room to new decor heights—even if the couch is covered in dog hair and the kids’ toys are scattered in the corner.

Although there’s not a scrap of dog hair in sight in this photo by @interiorofig, this collection of black and white photos is undeniably captivating, and creates a focal point for the entire room.

“Black and white photography has staying power and always feels current,” Helwig says. “A well-executed black and white photo gallery, like this, will add interest, drama, and depth to a space.”

Get the look: Frames for photo collections like these are easy enough to find at stores like Michaels, but when it comes to choosing which photos should go inside them, Helwig has some sound tips.

“A great way to incorporate black and white photography into a gallery wall is to curate a story. The photos don’t have to be of the same thing, but perhaps they relate based on a theme like geography, history, or culture.”

Find a story that works for your living room, then create your very own montage.

Hairpin leg armchairs

We love the simplicity of these armchairs in this post from @indoorsgram—plus the fact that they’re easy to move around and they’ll pair with just about any decor.

“Hairpin leg armchairs have a very distinct look, which works well with modern or industrial decor,” says interior designer Doreen Amico-Sorell. “They tend to look light and airy, which is a good feature in small spaces.”

Get the look: Whether your living room is big or small, a set of hairpin chairs will open up and modernize the space, without sacrificing comfort. Find the best shade for your new chairs by shopping this design from AllModern.

Velvet is making a comeback this season, and we can’t wait to incorporate something velvet—like these trunks from @soozidanson—into our living rooms.

“Unconventional and stylish storage is huge right now,” Helwig says. “The ability to store odds and ends that would otherwise be out, distracting from the composition, keeps the focus on the color story.

“Velvet evokes sumptuousness and grandeur,” he adds. “Large pieces or small accents in velvet can really make a space come alive with texture and prestige.”

Get the look: Add some velvet accents into your living room by shopping these trunks from Amazon, or upgrade your throw pillows with rich velvet pillow covers from Etsy.

Coffee and books, yes? ☕πŸ“š via @coffeeandbookss 🧑

A post shared by BOHEMIAN DECOR (@bohemiandecor) on

Books have always been a top decor item, but rather than rushing out to buy special editions to put on display, why not rearrange your current collection to become a statement piece? That’s exactly what @coffeeandbookss did in this repost from @bohemiandecor.

“Color-coded bookshelves create an aesthetically pleasing and cohesive space,” says Amico-Sorell. “It declutters the bookcase, especially when the shelves are full. When doing this, just make sure you plan how you want the colors to line up.”

Get the look: Even if your books tend to gravitate toward one color scheme, you can still upgrade your bookshelves by coordinating them based on color.

Start by making piles of books in general color schemes, then fan them out to see the different gradients.

In need of a new bookshelf to display your favorite collection of reads? Check out this one from Wayfair.
