The Property Brothers Design a Kitchen So Strange, You Can’t Not Look

Property Brothers "Island Getaway" recap

HGTV; realtor.com

“Property Brothers” stars Drew and Jonathan Scott are used to hearing strange requests from clients, but do they ever say no? The latest episode of their HGTB show has us wondering if they finally might.

In the “Island Getaway” episode, the Scott brothers meet Shaly and Leonel, a Las Vegas couple who love kitchen islands so much, they want two of them!

At first it looks as if Jonathan is going to straight out refuse, but he ends up going along with the couple’s idea. Can he make it work?

Here’s how the brothers navigate this troublesome double island situation, as well as the couple’s other requests—and some take-home lessons we can all learn from this weirdly wonderful one-of-a-kind renovation.

Two islands can work—in the right kitchen

In the beginning, Shaly and Leonel plan on having one big island in their large kitchen. But once the team starts renovating, the couple come to Jonathan with a concern. Leonel is worried about cleaning such a big countertop, saying he’d never be able to reach the middle of it. That’s when the couple start to talk about having two smaller islands instead.

Initially, Jonathan doesn’t like the idea, arguing that the carved-up space would be like grocery store aisles. But Shaly and Leonel stand firm. And it’s a good thing they do, because once the house is finished and Leonel and Shaly get to see their new kitchen, they’re in love.

“This makes it so unique and different,” Leonel says.

Even Jonathan concedes the two islands ended up looking better than he expected.

“I know I was making sure you were thinking it through,” he says, “but I’m over the moon. I think it’s perfect.”

It’s a good thing this kitchen is so large or else these two islands wouldn’t fit!

Don’t be afraid to go dark with the fireplace

If there’s anything that Shaly needs in her new house, it’s a fireplace. So of course, the Scotts have to impress when it comes to the fireplace in the living room.

And boy, do they deliver.

Instead of going with a traditional fireplace look, with light tile or brick, the Scott brothers decide to go bold with a dark fireplace, fitted in the middle of the wall between bookshelves. The feature even comes complete with slots to store firewood, which breaks up the intense look of the dark tile.

This fireplace is edgy, unique, and pleases Shaly greatly once she sees it.

This ain’t your grandmother’s wallpaper

Since this couple’s home already has a lot of light and dark contrast, Jonathan decides to play off this style with another dark feature.

This time it’s in the home office—with wallpaper.

No, there are no floral prints or faded ’70s colors. This chic, sleek, modern wallpaper makes the point that dressing up your walls doesn’t have to look dated. In fact, the dark, elegant hue combined with the light counter and accessories makes the space seem very hip. The contrast also gives the space dimension.

Overall, the office looks great. When Leonel sees the finished space, he says, “This space right here’s going to be a game changer.”

Edgy cabinets with frameless doors

Shaly and Leonel are on a tight budget when it comes to renovations. So, when there are a few surprises involving termites, Jonathan needs to find somewhere in the budget to save money.

Luckily, he finds opportunity with the kitchen cabinets. He tells the couple that he can save about $10,000 by merely swapping out the cabinets they like for a very similar style that has one key difference: The new cabinets are frameless, which means they lack the extra “frame” of wood on the front, which is nonetheless entirely covered by extra-large doors.

While the change was originally made to save money, it doesn’t look that way when the kitchen is done. Keeping with the light-to-dark theme in the rest of the house, these dark cabinets work perfectly with the white, herringbone-patterned backsplash. Plus, the brushed-gold hardware on the cabinets makes for a nice touch.

“It still looks amazing,” Leonel says. “It doesn’t look like we cut a corner.”

Drew agrees: “I love this look; it’s cleaner.”

An impressive dining area, even if you use it only sparingly

From the beginning, Leonel and Shaly insist that they probably won’t use a dining table—but they want one anyway.

And in a way, their choice makes sense. Many people don’t regularly use their formal dining room or even a dining table, sticking to kitchen island eating instead. Nonetheless, a dining table is a must-have during holidays and the occasional dinner party. The trick is finding a table that looks good and works in the space.

So Drew and Jonathan find the perfect solution, placing a dining space between the massive kitchen and the living room, creating a nice transition that doesn’t get in the way of the living area. The table and chairs are beautiful, too, and they enhance the home’s design.

So, do the Scott brothers deliver?

Despite a termite issue with the house, the brothers are able to give Leonel and Shaly a beautiful abode—while still coming in under their $125,000 reno budget!

But what’s even better than staying under budget? Creating a home that the family will love for years to come.

“It feels like it was all meant to be,” Shaly says as she looks around her finished home.

Leonel loves the house, too, saying, “We knew it was going to be great, but this is—this is spot on.”
