Former ‘Bachelorette’ JoJo Fletcher Talks DIY Tips, Trends, and Fails

JoJo Fletcher

When first we met JoJo Fletcher, she was a contestant on “The Bachelor” who then went on to further fame on “The Bachelorette.” After choosing hunky Jordan Rodgers as her fiance on the popular reality TV show, she returned to a real estate career.

She’s made a name for herself on the home makeover front, hosting a CNBC show called “Cash Pad” for homeowners hoping to turn their properties into ideal short-term rentals.

Fletcher and Rodgers had hoped to get married this summer, but the coronavirus pandemic forced a change in plans. In the meantime, Fletcher has delved even deeper into DIY home projects.

“We’ve been spending more time in our homes the last few months, and many of us are feeling ready for a refresh or noticed areas we want to repaint,” says Fletcher.

We spoke with Fletcher, who says she’s learned a lot from her own projects, and picked up a few solid DIY pointers.

Which are the easiest and most impactful DIY projects to tackle?

I love tackling DIY projects like painting walls, cabinets, or furniture refurbishing. I tend to leave structural, plumbing, and electrical projects for the pros.

You can usually tackle projects like painting or decorating on your own over a weekend, and these changes can make a huge improvement in your home.

Paint and primer aren’t too expensive, but can really boost your curb appeal and home value. Primer will ensure your paint looks sleek and vibrant for years to come, and paint can update and elevate just about any interior or exterior space.

What do you think is a ‘must-have’ for a DIY project?

Quality products and tools are needed for any DIY home project. You want your projects to last and look great over time. And if you’re taking the time to do a project, you want your time spent to be worthwhile.

What should we do to prep for a DIY project?

I encourage anyone who’s about to take on a DIY project to research in advance for inspiration, pro tips, and products. You want to be confident once you get started.

When in doubt, your local library and hardware store reps have a wealth of information, so if you have specific questions or are looking for general advice, those are two great places to start.

What are some of the epic fails you see DIYers make? How can we avoid them?

There’s no worse feeling than starting a project and then feeling like you’re in way over your head.

Fortunately, just about every DIY mistake can be fixed or resolved. I think one of the most prevalent mistakes DIYers commit is starting projects without correct prep.

I get it, we’re all eager and excited to get to work, and to make our visions come to life. But preparation time is incredibly important and will help you avoid additional mistakes down the road.

Which DIY trends are superhot right now?

Bold paint colors continue to be a hot DIY trend. It’s a quick way to add personality and uniqueness to your home.

Many of us previously reached for neutrals for interior home projects because they’re fairly safe and versatile. However, lately I’ve seen many of my friends and designers playing with bright, bold, or moody hues.

I love seeing these bold colors on accent walls, textured surfaces, or features in the home like built-in shelving or archways. For example, for the shiplap wall in my office, I selected Kettle Black, which is a dark blue with a black undertone.

What is your DIY mantra?

The great thing about DIY projects is you can almost always change your mind, even if you’ve already started. You are in charge.

Sometimes I have what I think is a great style idea in my mind, and then once the project is underway I pivot and the result is even better.

The best advice I have is to not be afraid of DIY and to instead look at it as a fun challenge to accomplish. That’s not to say every project is going to be easy, but it will be so rewarding when it’s complete, and you can take a step back and admire your work.
