10 Timeless Bedroom Trends That’ll Never Go Out of Style

The bedroom is a personal haven reserved for quiet reading, a good night’s sleep, and other indoor activities (ahem). But this doesn’t mean design elements here should be ignored.

Instead, give your cozy nest a critical eye by investing in stylish pieces, colors, and fabrics that will stand the test of time. It’s part of our series “Timeless Home Design Trends“—and in fact, the bedroom is especially important when it comes to decor since the way you put it together may actually affect the quality of your sleep.

Of course, you also want a bedroom that’s attractive and functional, so why not recharge at the end of a long day with some of these timeless trends? The good news: Upgrading the boudoir isn’t as expensive as other rooms of the house. Try a few of the following—and sleep well!

1. White bedding

The most classic, timeless approach to bedroom design is centered around simple, white bed linens.

“Limit all of your sheets and spreads to this palette, and instead of playing around with colors here, introduce texture instead,” offers Drew Henry of Design Dudes.

Henry’s own white duvet has an embroidered brick pattern, and he restricts color to accent pillows and throws. This soft, organic cotton pick fits the bill with a fluffy eyelash accent along the edge ($139.95 and up, Crate & Barrel).

2. Platform bed

Simple sleepers are your best bets when shopping for timeless bedroom looks. One that works nicely: a low-slung platform bed. And if your pick has storage underneath, even better.

Most platform beds are affordable, easy to assemble, and can accommodate your mattress right on top as there’s no need for a box spring or other foundation.

3. Upholstered headboard

It’s easy to see the soft, cozy appeal of a fabric headboard—and it quickly adds texture, color, or a pattern to your space.

“Whether you’re drawn toward sumptuous velvet, traditional toile, or a colorful geometric design, upholstered headboards are a great way to create a sleeping oasis,” says Anna Brockway, co-founder and president of Chairish.

4. Grass-cloth walls

Wallpaper fans will be disappointed to learn that experts don’t recommend wild designs in the bedroom.

“No toile or anything like it. Just stick with plain woven looks or grass cloth, in my opinion, because otherwise, wallpaper is too changeable and trendy,” says Amy Bly of Great Impressions Home Staging and Interiors.

Neutral grass cloth is visually calming, yet it adds a subtle texture and even a faint natural grass scent.

5. Slipper chair

Along with white bedding, slipper chairs rank highly on the list of timeless bedroom trends. This petite seat is an easy addition to most bedrooms since it’ll fit into a corner and it’s a useful perch for putting on socks and shoes. (Just don’t let it become a spot for castoff clothes!)

You’ll have to assemble the pick here ($131.99, Wayfair), but its low price and stylish look is worth the effort.

6. Four-poster bed

Nothing beats the drama of a canopy bed.

Overstock

This timeless trend is a twofer: a dramatic canopy makes a statement, but still gives a nod to traditional home design, says Brockway.

“For centuries, four-poster and canopy beds have graced chic bedrooms—and these days, savvy shoppers can find them in every style, shape, and patina,” she adds.

This bed is made from black nickel-coated metal for a modern vibe ($985.49, Overstock).

7. Pleats and scallops

Delicate curves are timeless on lampshades in the bedroom.

Details matter in the bedroom, from your rugs and curtains to trays, pillows, and lighting. And when it comes to lamps, top your bedside lights with a scallop-edge shade.

“Scallops and pleats are perfect for dressing up your bedroom lighting—it’s a trend that we’re always behind,” says Brockway.

This 16-inch silk shade is lined and comes with a sweet braided trim ($79.99, Wayfair).

8. Shaker dresser

Timeless furniture blends into the bedroom without competing with other elements. For the most minimal, yet beautiful pieces, look to the Shakers. These dressers, beds, and chairs are recommended by Bly for their craftsmanship, simple design, and home-spun appeal.

9. Chaise lounge

Relax with coffee (or a cocktail) on this fab lounger.

Amazon

You might see a chaise lounge in a living room, but its true home is in the boudoir. Position this classic piece along a wall near a window for afternoon reading or naps. This pick sports cozy velour fabric and stylish tufting, and it comes with its own bolster for added comfort ($370.78, Amazon).

10. Lacquer accents

The pros urge a soothing palette in the bedroom, but pops of color are definitely needed for energy and interest.

“I love the idea of incorporating bright hues and shine through lacquered and painted pieces—and calming grays, blues, and greens are at the top of the list,” says Brockway.

Try this pretty geometric number, which comes in six shades and would look right at home on a dresser or vanity ($28, Design Within Reach).
