Our outdoor spaces arguably have never been more important, especially this summer, with so many of us itching to get outside after months of quarantine.

But wait—what’s that, you say? You don’t have any outdoor space to speak of? Instead of a big back porch or a lush backyard, you’re cooped up in an apartment or condo with only a sad, tiny slab of concrete and some metal railing.

Don’t despair! You don’t have to stay inside and be miserable. Even you, urban dweller, can turn your little balcony into a chic oasis. You just need some inspiration to get started.

Which is why we decided to focus this week’s trending decor search on helping to make your balcony the dreamiest hangout it can be. Here are five of the hottest balcony trends on Instagram, and how you can steal the look to enjoy all of your summer days—and evenings—spent at home.

1. Balcony bar

If you can’t go to an actual bar right now (or simply don’t want to), why not bring the bar to you? We’ve already covered some of the best cocktail accessories on the market, and this balcony bar featured by @viewsbalconybar is another must-have for any urbanite who wants to sip and savor en plein air.

“A balcony bar is the perfect solution for balconies of any size,” says Michelle Harrison-McAllister of Michelle Harrison Design. “For those who like to entertain, bar stools provide additional seating for friends, while also creating the perfect spot to sit back and enjoy the view. A balcony bar like this one also creates the perfect space to work from home or enjoy a wine and cheese night.”

2. Vertical garden

Just because you don’t have the space for a huge outdoor garden doesn’t mean you can’t still have one—and this vertical garden featured by @homestylinginspiration is the perfect example of an urban gardening success.

“On the balcony, space is at a premium so don’t waste your precious square footage filling it with cumbersome planters,” says Vicki Liston of On the Fly DIY. “Take your garden vertical, and you can still enjoy the living elements without sacrificing space. You can easily create your own with anything from a metal grid, vertical pot rack, or wall shelf to a hanging wardrobe cart or even a hanging shoe organizer.”

3. Pallet sofa

Pallet furniture has long been one of our favorite ways to easily (and cheaply) furnish outdoor spaces, and this pallet sofa featured by @le.lolie is no exception.

“A wood pallet sofa gives the feel of a modern platform bed, but it’s able to withstand the elements outside,” says Liston. “To re-create the look yourself, use a close-boarded pallet and dress it up with outdoor cushions, throws, and pillows for maximum coziness.”

4. Burlap curtains

Every city dweller knows you can never have enough privacy, which is why these natural burlap curtains from @tanja__home will make the perfect addition to your balcony.

“Privacy is a must for optimal patio enjoyment,” says Liston. “Burlap is a quick and easy way to achieve that privacy while giving your balcony a natural, organic look.”

It’s also heavier than traditional fabric and does a better job of blocking out direct sunlight, Liston points out.

Get the look: Purchase a length of burlap from your local fabric store, and use a simple slip stitch to create clean hemlines. If hand-sewing isn’t your thing, opt instead for these natural jute drapes from Etsy.

5. Swinging seat

Who says swings are just for kids? Not @mila_jestcafe, who’s really making the most of her outdoor space with this swinging seat.

“Nothing brings us back to childhood quite like a swing,” says Harrison-McAllister. “It’s whimsical and stylish, and offers the feeling of floating, as well as tricking the eye with that ‘wow’ factor.”

Get the look: We won’t lie—you could make this yourself. But you could also just snag one of these gorgeous Gemmenne swing chairs from AllModern.
