You lock eyes with his big brown eyes at the pet adoption center. You walk over to him, let his cold, wet nose sniff your hand and you're sure he's the one for you. Before you know it, you're overwhelmed by the warmth and joy that comes with the unconditional love of a puppy. You've filled out the paperwork and are racing to the pet store with little Barkley asleep in your arms. You have no idea what lies ahead over the next 12 months of puppyhood, but you're excited to have your puppy by your side and eager to experience it all together -- the good, the bad and the gross.

In partnership with Puppy Chow, we've interviewed puppy parents at three different stages of the first year of puppyhood: at the first week together to the first couple of months to the end of puppy's first year. We asked about their lives with a puppy, and some of their answers may surprise you.
