Target Has a New Line by a Design Duo That Trumps Chip and Jo in One Key Way

"9 By Design"

Bravo

Target is adept at approaching hot designers to crank out home decor lines (e.g., Chip and Joanna Gaines), and the latest duo to debut furnishings here seems to have plenty of potential to sell like hotcakes: the Novogratz.

True, this name does not roll off the tongue; nonetheless, Robert and Cortney Novogratz have more than a few things in common with Chip and Jo.

For one, both are married couples with large families. In fact, the Novogratzes have even more kids than the Gaineses, who currently clock in at five tykes. The Novogratzes have seven kids, whom they raised in Manhattan of all places, all while juggling their home design business.

The Robert and Cortney are also reality TV stars, although you’ll be hard-pressed to remember them from their 2009 Bravo show, “9 by Design.”

The show ran for just one season. Then in 2011, this designer family resurfaced on HGTV with a new show, “Home by Novagrantz.”

That show lasted just two seasons. Still, the Novagratzes have clearly been busy with their design business. There’s no doubt this mom and pop team is practiced in the art of creating home furnishings that are not only chic enough for a Manhattan penthouse, but also as kid-friendly as can be.

And now that we’re all spending more time at home during the coronavirus pandemic, many a parent might be craving their help keeping their homes from devolving into couch-jumping, crayon-scrawled chaos.

“As home has become more important, we believe multifunctional furniture that is well designed has the potential to improve your home and well-being,” they recently told the Houston Chronicle.

A close look at the new Novogratz line at Target

The new Novogratz collection at Target, which includes coffee tables, sofas, accent chairs, lighting, bedding, and accessories, features modern lines, muted shades, and sleek profiles. You’ll also find compact desks and chairs for continued home schooling and remote work, plus nesting tables and plant stands to punch up room corners.

For some advice, we asked the pros for their favorite picks. They came up with the following 10 selections that could be just what you need to add a fresh new feel to your home decor this fall.

1. Dining chair

You’ll dig this well-priced pair of dining chairs.

Target

Karen Gray-Plaisted of Design Solutions KGP votes for this attractive yet simple dining room seat, which also comes in deep green ($350 for two).

Quilted backing and walnut-finished legs lend elegance, while the velvet fabric warms any room. The pair can also work well as accent chairs in the living room.

2. Sofa

This spacious seat also comes in blue and gray.

Target

Pink hits a happy note, and this tufted sofa converts to a sleeper with one push, making it a win-win in a home office or den ($390).

“I can see young people flocking to pick up this piece for their apartments as there’s a hip, stylish element that really works,” says Ana Cummings of the eponymous design firm.

3. TV stand

A handsome stand for your TV and gaming system

Target

Workhorses like end tables and consoles are unsung heroes in the home, so don’t skip what appears to be a plain ol’ table.

“I love this TV console because it’s simple and modern but would fit in with a lot of home decor styles,” says Amy Bly of Great Impressions Home Staging and Interiors.

This piece can hold up to 60 pounds of entertaining equipment and has a handy lower nook for remotes plus a back hole to corral wires and cords ($160).

4. Futon

Memory foam makes this the comfiest nap spot in the house.

Target

“For once, [it’s] an attractive futon—and it’s reasonably priced,” says Gray-Plaisted.

Available in pink, green, and mustard yellow, this convertible piece has a back that reclines as two separate pieces for multiple lounging options ($520).

5. Ottoman

Green and gold pair beautifully on this retro stool.

Target

Gray-Plaisted also favors this stunning ottoman, especially the vibrant forest-green hue.

“So many of these pieces have real style, and the overall line is quite versatile and fresh,” she adds.

An elegant perch like this one can also double as a coffee table with the addition of a small tray ($170).

6. Bookcase

Five shelves and a groovy slate shade? Sold!

Target

Revamp your home library with this two-tone walnut bookshelf. This piece is a particular winner in the collection as the asymmetrical design adds flair, elevating it from the usual staid selection of big-box book cases ($73).

7. Plant stand

Sloping lines plus three spots for your growing succulent collection

Target

Your Boston fern deserves some love, so consider this three-tiered plant stand to display it with pride.

The powder-coated metal gives it an industrial style, and its slim size makes it easy to tuck next to a wall or slide near a front door ($65).

8. Comforter set

This set comes with shams with zippers, rather than pesky buttons.

Target

Ready to refresh your bedroom with a contemporary comforter set? This reversible geometric pattern is printed on soft microfiber that’s machine washable and comes with matching shams for a pulled-together look (from $99).

9. Record console

Slot the Beatles on the left and the reggae on the right.

Target

Vinyl is back, baby, and it’s living large with a record console that’s dedicated to housing your old LPs. The top is wide enough to accommodate your player and speakers, and the lower level sports wire dividers to prop up your tunes ($200).

10. Floor lamp

A statuesque light for your foyer or living room

Target

Dark gray with a golden glow underside makes this floor lamp a worthy home upgrade. Two chains allow for dual light options, and you can scoop up the matching table lamp if you love a coordinated look ($102).
