The question many new parents find themselves asking is, "How is it humanly possible for a person this tiny to take up so much space?" And if the nursery is already on the small side, it's hard to imagine how you can fit a crib, changing table, glider, and toys (so many toys). But, much like parenthood, you can do it. Find out our tricks for making the most of your space and creating a nursery that you love as much as your baby (well, almost).
1. Think vertically
Drawing the eye upwards using window treatments, decorative crown molding, wall covering on the ceiling, or thoughtfully placed artwork can help make the space seem larger. Additionally, when floor space starts filling up with furniture, consider tall storage or shelves to maximize square footage.
2. Use mirrors to capitalize on natural light
When strategically placed, a decorative mirror will not only be a lovely design element, but it can also be extremely helpful in bouncing light back into the space - making it feel bright and fresh.
3. Don't be afraid to fill the space
Though it might sound counterintuitive, filling a small space with functional furniture can make it seem larger. Be thoughtful in your furniture placement and design a floor plan that works for you to make the space feel intimate.
4. Opt for a light, neutral wall color
Creating an airy feel in a cramped space can be easy as painting the walls a light, neutral color. And if you're going the gender-neutral route, try a silvery shade of grey.
5. Be smart about storage
Creativity is key when designing a small nursery, so rethink the layout. Can a closet double as a changing space and storage area? Can you stash supplies in an ottoman? Think about how items and spaces can work double duty.
