Use Feng Shui to Improve Your Home

Translated as "wind-water," the three major concepts of Feng Shui are the flow of energy, the balance of yin and yang and the interaction of the five elements in the universe: fire, earth, metal, water and wood. The placement and design of furniture isn't just a physical matter; it also helps to maintain the balance of yin and yang within the physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and intellectual realms leading to a healthier mind and body.

The balance of energy is the cornerstone behind the Feng Shui philosophy. Common sense dictates that if you block a living space, the various forms of energy are therefore, blocked. Create a more cozy and relaxing home environment with these five Feng Shui decorating tips that relate to each of the five universal elements.

Balance water elements in your living room

You probably never thought water design elements should be in the living room right? Water is considered to be an auspicious element, so it's a good idea to balance water which is yin, in almost every living space, with the yang energy of stones as seen by this indoor fountain. If your front entrance opens up into your living room, balance a water element on the left side of your front door as you are looking out.

Balance wood elements in the yard

The center of the house is the earth element and represents harmonious relationships. Therefore, it makes sense not to keep a potted tree in the center of your home. Also, don't block your front door with a tree as it will obstruct good flowing energy. Instead, plant version of the "money tree" such as prosperity bamboo to activate your wealth.

Balance fire elements in the kitchen

Water destroys fire, so it's a good idea to balance these elements by keeping the stove and the sink not too close together on the same counter. Feng Shui philosophy also supports not having the stove and the sink face each other as this represents destruction of your family's wealth.

Ground yourself with the earth element

Knowing how to use the earth element in your home is an important part of the Feng Shui application. Use earth tones such as browns, greens or sand to generate an overall feeling of grounding, balance and stability. When used intentionally within a Feng Shui context, this element can enhance physical strength and order. Try also complementing earth elements with other non-earth elements such as metal.

Get clear with the metal element

The metal element in the Feng Shui cycle is known for its strength in bringing forth clarity. In a room, the metal element can be expressed in a person's organization. Rocks and stones represent the metal element as do iron, aluminum, gold and silver. White, gray, silver or pastel colors also work.

Each time you tackle a room, notice if you have some of the Feng Shui decorating elements already in place, and what you can do to further enhance the five universal elements. The key is to create a more balanced and inviting home that will also support areas in your life such as prosperity, relationships and abundance.
