“Property Brothers” stars Drew and Jonathan Scott are down to their final challenges in this season of “Brother vs. Brother,” which means it’s crunch time in this Los Angeles renovation battle.
In the latest episode, “The Mystery Judge,” the brothers fix up their guest bedrooms and bathrooms in hopes of impressing the guest judge, who eventually reveals himself to be Orlando Soria from “Build Me Up.”
Jonathan has set aside $400,000 for his bedrooms and bathrooms, while Drew has earmarked $440,000. Though these are big chunks of change, they may not be enough for the high-end designs these brothers are eyeing.

A painted barrel ceiling can steal the show

In the kitchen and dining room challenge earlier this season, Drew refurbished a beautiful, hand-painted barrel ceiling. It was a big hit, so he decides to add another barrel ceiling to the hallway outside the guest bedrooms.
As it turns out, Drew is right to double down on this ceiling style. The round shape looks great, adding style and height to the hallway. To finish the look, he adds a painted mural on the ceiling and walls. The mural is subtle and classic with intricate floral details. It’s perfect for this old Hollywood home.
When Soria sees the feature, he loves it.
“This would make me want to buy the house,” he says.
A tub can go inside a shower

Since Drew’s house is so huge, he adds many large, beautiful guest bedrooms and bathrooms, but Soria is most impressed by one bathroom in particular: It has a tub inside a large shower. The tub looks classic, while the shower tile and glass door are modern. It’s a fun mix of styles, and it’s a creative use of space.
“That’s such a smart use of space,” Soria says. “I would have never thought of that.”
Create a secret play space for kids

All of the bedrooms Drew designs are unique, but one is extra special.
At the beginning of the challenge, Drew realizes that he has extra space in the attic above one guest bedroom. He decides to add an extra room up there, which can serve as a fun, secret play room for some lucky kids.
When the project is done, Soria is impressed by this creative addition and is excited about its versatility.
“I thought this would be so much fun if you were a little kid to come up here and play,” Soria tells Drew and Jonathan. “But also, practically speaking, as a grown-up, you just love having extra storage space.”
The best part is that the bonus space costs hardly anything. It requires some drywall and paint, but it all comes to just $2,000, while adding lots of value.
Go extra bold with patterned wallpaper

While Drew sticks with light, bright, and sophisticated styles in his guest bedrooms, Jonathan goes bold with colorful wallpaper.
In one bedroom, he uses a pink floral wallpaper that Soria loves.
“This is contemporary mixed with traditional mixed with feminine and masculine and light and dark. I would love to stay in this room as a guest,” Soria says.

Meanwhile, another one of Jonathan’s bedrooms has a wild wallpaper with deep colors and owl prints. Soria loves this room, too, telling Jonathan that it will sell the house.
“Everything in here is adventurous and wild while still being very cool and collected,” Soria says when looking around the space. “This is an amazing bedroom.”
Jazz up a bathroom with tile

Jonathan nails the bedroom design, but it’s the bathrooms that really impress Soria. One shower tile in particular, with a shiny green look, stands out.
“It has that high-end vibe that clients in this neighborhood would be looking for,” he says.
Which ‘Property Brother’ star is better?

Both brothers definitely impress their guest judge with this challenge.
Drew does a great job with classic styles and a creative use of his guest space. While his bonus attic room and barrel ceiling cost extra, putting him slightly over his $440,000 budget to $448,000, it’s worth the cost.
Meanwhile, Jonathan’s daring styles in his guest bedrooms and bathrooms impress Soria, who loves the wallpaper and tile choices. Also, Jonathan stays in his $400,000 budget, which is a win in itself.
It’s close, but in the end Soria declares Jonathan the winner. While he loved Drew’s looks, Soria explains that Jonathan’s bold styles couldn’t be beat.
And this round, he even wins a prize: The brothers had agreed that the winning renovator would spend a day learning how to be a superhero-like stuntman with stunt legend Jim Churchman. So Jonathan gets to fly high, literally and figuratively, leaving Drew in the dust.
