“Property Brothers” stars Drew and Jonathan Scott have both worked hard in this season of “Brother vs. Brother,” but in the end, there can be only one winner.
In the Season 7 finale, appropriately titled “And the Winner Is…,” the brothers need to finish the exteriors and backyards of their L.A. homes before putting them on the market. And they’ve both invested a ton in making their curb appeal stand out: Jonathan has an impressive $378,000 budget for his home’s outside space, while Drew has an even bigger budget of $397,000.
So far, Jonathan has won over the guest judges on three of the renovation challenges this season; Drew has come in at two victories. But the true winner is whoever sells his house for a higher profit.
So far, they’ve each won three seasons of “Brother vs. Brother”—which makes Season 7 the big tiebreaker! Read on to find out whose house fetches a higher price, and see why you might want to try some of these upgrades in your own home, too.
A shipping container can make a great swimming pool
Jonathan wants to make sure his house stands out, so he installs a backyard showstopper: a pool. However, there’s one small problem.
“Adding a pool is a big draw for buyers with the L.A. weather,” Jonathan says, “but there’s a finite amount of space in my backyard, so I’m going to have to get creative.”
He ends up putting in a custom shipping container pool, which is compact enough to fit in the small yard, but big enough to make the space feel like an oasis. Then he turns this simple water feature into a true entertaining space by adding a submerged glass window on one side and finishing it off with a sunken seating area.
In the end, the pool and entertaining space look fabulous.
“It’s the central feature to my backyard vision,” Jonathan says.
Indoor style can work outside, too
While Jonathan already has a unique pool with a fun entertaining area, he also wants to include a more formal dining space.
So he adds a covered dining area on the back patio. In order to get a seamless flow from inside to outside, Jonathan includes Spanish styles that are reminiscent of the interior style.
“I’m installing the same big wooden beams I used inside the house outside in this dining area,” Jonathan says. “And I am carrying the sophisticated Spanish theme outside, too, with some intricate floor tiles.”
The finished patio blends perfectly with the kitchen and dining space inside, giving the home an indoor-outdoor feel.
An outdoor kitchen can exude vacation vibes
While Jonathan may have a sleek pool and stunning dining area, Drew is determined to make his space just as unique and luxurious as Jonathan’s.
He goes all out with an outdoor kitchen inspired by his wedding reception in Italy.
“If we re-create that mood here for an outdoor kitchen and outdoor eating area,” he tells his designer Breeze, “I think that vibe, that whimsical feel will be exactly what this house needs.”
When the outdoor kitchen is finished, it looks beautiful. With bright colors and clean lines, it has a relaxed Italian charm that will be perfect for entertaining.
“Complete with a full-size pizza oven and state-of-the-art barbecue, this space will be all set to host laid-back and lavish dinner parties,” Drew says.
Warm climates call for a formal dining area outdoors, too
Drew does an amazing job with his outdoor kitchen design, but he’s not done with his entertaining space yet.
While he has a casual space for cooking and eating, Drew knows that L.A. buyers will also want a more formal alfresco dining space. So he dresses up his back patio with a long table that’s big enough to fit extended family on the holidays. Then, to make it extra special, he adds a modern pergola, complete with vines growing up the sides. This also adds extra color to the yard.
To finish the entertaining space, Drew adds an indoor-outdoor bar, where guests can sit on stools and either admire the outside view or chat with people inside the house. It’s a great addition that will be perfect for big events.
Pathways make it easier to walk around a yard
While Drew focuses on creating gorgeous dining spaces, he also gives a lot of attention to the design details.
Between his formal patio dining space and the outdoor kitchen, he creates a beautiful travertine walking path that includes a sitting area. This path serves as an easy way to get around the yard and a convenient spot where guests can mingle.
As the travertine is installed, Drew is impressed by the classic look.
“It’s going to be so nice, somebody could have their wedding here,” Drew says.
So which Scott wins this season’s ‘Brother vs. Brother’?
Both brothers have worked hard on their homes and yards, but in the end Drew is crowned the winner!
After buying his house for $2,300,000 and spending $2,050,000 on the interior and exterior renovation, Drew invests a total of $4,400,000. While Drew thinks the home is worth about $5,600,000, it actually sells for an amazing $5,800,000. That’s a stunning $1,400,000 profit!
Meanwhile, Jonathan buys his house for $2,400,000 and renovates it for $2,040,000, for a total investment of $4,440,000. Jonathan lists the home for $5,500,000 and gets an offer for $5,640,000. That’s a $1,200,000 profit—which is great, but not enough to beat Drew.
Though Drew wins this tiebreaker, both homes have clearly received winning makeovers that are sure to be enjoyed by the lucky buyers.
