Disabled? Watch Your Step Using Groupon

2016-01-31-1454264441-2097916-Groupon.jpg

The card may have no value until it is added at the register, but going along with that, their product has no value, especially if you are disable.

I am a sportswriter, but I felt that customers needed to hear about this experience with the service from Groupon.

My wife and I bought a Groupon to attend a "Discover the Dinosaurs" even in NJ, with our five year old nephew and his parents. The kiddo loves dinosaurs, so it seemed like a great idea.

A quick background, I am disabled; I have cardiovascular issues. I can function, but I can't support myself standing around for a long period of time. So, we called to confirm all of the typical access; i.e. ramp, to get in, no stairs necessary, and other basic background questions, so we went ahead and attended the event.

We arrive, and EVERYONE is in the lobby waiting to get it, although the event is open. People that paid, people that didn't pay, it didn't make a difference. The room was a zoo. There was a long line to change your Groupon voucher into a ticket. The line didn't move. Ten minutes, twenty minutes, nothing. They had no accommodations to sit. After waiting over an hour to get in, we couldn't stay, as I was unsteady on my feet. We went to the one staffer we could find to demand to get in, or a refund. They informed us to call Groupon.

The day of the event, we returned home, and called Groupon. My wife made the call,, and was told they would look into it and call back. We never received that phone call back. Weeks went by, and we still received nothing.

Finally, we called back, and spoke to another representative, who found no record of our previous call. First she informed us that we could receive a refund if we made the call the day of. Upon informing her that we DID call the day of, she had no answer. After informing us how "frustrated" we must feel about four times, my wife demanded a supervisor.

After being disconnected, we had to call and leave a message. We received a fairly prompt call, and were transferred to a supervisor. In the middle of the conversation with the supervisor, we were disconnected again. Upon receiving a return call from the supervisor, my wife was told that we could have gone a different day, again that we didn't call the day of, and that we should have asked about this prior to attending.

Who asks whether or not there will be seats on a long line prior to getting into an event?

The bottom line result was that we received nothing.

The moral of the story is to watch yourself. This may not be their dealing with everyone, but it was their dealing with us. Tread carefully, and have all of your ducks in a row if you are purchasing a Groupon for an event if you have any type of disability.

They may leave you out in the cold.

Makeover Your Medicine Cabinet: Winter Edition

If one of your New Year's resolutions was to get organized, you may not have been thinking you should start with your medicine cabinet. However, it is actually one of the most important areas to keep clean and stocked -- especially in the middle of cold and flu season. I recommend starting this process by clearing out all products and wiping down the inside and outside of the cabinet with an eco-friendly cleaning solution such as this homemade 3-ingredient all-purpose cleaner from Apartment Therapy (seriously, all you need is water, hydrogen peroxide and lemon juice!).

Once everything is out of the cabinet, you need to begin sorting through what you need, organizing what you have and purchasing what you may be missing. Here are some tips:

Out with the Old (& Smelly)
Are items outdated, old or smelly? They need to be thrown out, even if they're not empty. Expired items will no longer be effective and may even be hazardous to your health. Before you toss products into the trash, checkout these tips from the FDA on how to properly dispose of unused medicine. In addition to looking at dates on medicine, be sure to also look for cosmetics that may have expired--if the consistency and/or smell of the product has changed considerably, throw it out.

Add Cold Weather Medicines
There are certain items you should always have in your medicine cabinet regardless of the season such as basic pain relievers and products that relieve mild digestive ailments (here is a great checklist from Real Simple). However, in the winter months, you will want to add cough medicines, decongestants and a thermometer (I like the digital options such as these from Walgreens). I also recommend having children's versions of medicines available. Even if you don't have children of your own, you never know when a tiny house guest might need some immediate relief.

Manage Duplications
Do you have three of each item crowding your cabinet? Move the extra items to another area such as a linen closet or kitchen pantry. You can continue to keep them organized by creating small bins labeled by type of product (i.e. "Lotions", "Digestion"). Keep in mind that some medications and cosmetic products become less effective when stored in areas of high humidity or heat and you should always keep items out of reach of children.

Re-stock First Aid Kit
While you probably use your first aid kit more during the warmer weather months, never underestimate a slick sledding hill mishap or a fall on a slippery sidewalk. Your at-home emergency kit should include Band Aids, sterile wash for cleansing wounds, ointment, gauze and burn relief. The Red Cross gives you a more complete list of items to include. It's always better to take the time to make sure you're prepared before an emergency actually happens.

Make it Pretty
You may not think "medicine cabinet" and "pretty" should be used in the same sentence, but as someone who spends a great deal of time working with people and businesses on keeping their environments clean and healthy, I know that the more attractive an area is, the more likely you are to keep it organized. HGTV.com suggests purchasing glass jars for cotton balls or bandages, using small plastic organizers for tweezers and combs and taking advantage of the removable shelves to organize items by size.

Of Mice and Mylar

Last Sunday, we saw the first of the elk entering our property.

The lead elk was like a scout, poking through the brush near the Neacoxie Creek.

You could hear the "whoosh" of the herd long before you could really see them, conjuring up visions of the prehistoric world. Would mastodons be next?

Enticed by the large, grassy neighboring lot, the herd emerged from the narrow path and woods by the creek and began staking their positions. At first they stood assembled in a lineup, one after the other taking some kind of preordained position in various corners of the lot. The smaller animals came first out of the woods, and the rows filled out. In a corner of the group, two young bulls frolicked and playfully butted heads. Then from the woods emerged the majestic elders, with mottled skin and huge racks, proud creatures flanked by their harem and offspring.

"What's that one doing?" my wife, the Jersey girl, asked.

Streetside, a circle of elk were crowding around the wooden utility pole. The pole was held upright by metal wires, covered with a protective yellow covering. The elk began chewing on the protective shell. They began pulling at the wires. They gnawed at the wood pole. They scraped and pulled and burrowed.

"Should I call the power company?" she asked.

"N-no," I said, mesmerized, standing at the window. "I think it's only a guide wire."

Still, the animals kept working, until others in the group folded their legs and settled down like an audience at symphony hall.

Short-circuit

The day before I'd heard Pacific Power's Sheila Holden at the Seaside Downtown Development Association breakfast at the Pig 'N Pancake.

"What can we do at Pacific Power to be a better partner with the community?" Holden asked. "What are some of the things that are important to the people, the businesses in the community? We want to not only make the community better, but the businesses better."

A hand shot up.

"Has there been something done to the substation to cover the top so we don't have another Fourth of July?" Jeff Ter Har asked.

He was referring to last year, when Seaside's Independence Day celebration was brought to a sudden halt after an outage.

Seaside, Gearhart and parts of Warrenton were without power from about 4:40 p.m. to 10:20 p.m. as Pacific Power crews replaced damaged equipment. A balloon, officials later announced, caused a main substation transformer to short-circuit near Seaside Factory Outlet Center.

"Balloons may seem like small things," Pacific Power Safety Manager Gene Morris said at the time. "But when escaped balloons touch power lines or substations, even the smallest amount of metal content material can conduct electricity."

When a balloon "gets in there in the wrong spot, it just basically short circuits the transmitting of the electricity," Pacific Power spokesman Tom Gauntt added.

"I knew that would come up," Holden said, six months later. "Mylargate. No, we don't cover the tops of our substations."

Pacific Power even holds events with balloons, Holden confessed. "But they are not Mylar."

Nature on the lines

These seemingly harmless, festive party items cause, according to SafeElectricity.org, "hundreds of thousands" of power outages, including the one in Seaside.

In California, under the "Balloon Law," Mylar balloons have been prohibited since 1990. Even with the ban, foil-lined party balloons cause 100 to 150 outages a year, according to Pacific Gas & Electric. In 2008, a California legislator introduced a bill to ban those, too. Florists and party planners objected, and successfully lobbied for its defeat.

Even kites have been known to bring down power systems.

A New York Times opinion writer in 2013 chronicled outages caused by animals after reading about a squirrel that electrocuted itself on a power line in Tampa, Florida, cutting electricity to 700 customers. He came up with 50 power outages caused by squirrels in 24 states.

In March, an animal about the size of a raccoon got into a substation in southeast Bend and caused fuses to blow, knocking out power to more than 8,600 customers and blacking out homes, stores and traffic lights for three hours.

Twenty-one buildings in Tulsa, Oklahoma, -- including the Oklahoma State University Medical Center -- were affected by a rodent-caused power outage in October, after a rat or mouse crawled into a transformer's switch gear.

Less than a month ago, a squirrel knocked out power to 1,800 customers in Sunnyside, Washington.

Seeing the elk working so diligently at the wire in our backyard reminded me of the random qualities of nature. A bitter northeast wind. Animals on a ridge path. A children's balloon.
How powerful we are. Yet how powerless, as well.

Quasimodo, A Rescue Pup With A Hunched Back, Now Has A Happy Foster Home

This sweet dog may not look like your average pooch, but he's definitely deserving of all the TLC in the world.

A stray German shepherd, who is named Quasimodo, was born with a rare condition called "short spine syndrome." Because of it, the dog quite literally, has a short spine, causing him to have a hunched back and a shorter stature than a typical German shepherd.

While the special pooch was initially found roaming around in Kentucky, life has since started to look up for him. He was sent to nonprofit rescue organization Secondhand Hounds in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, on Thursday, where his unusual appearance was immediately embraced. And while he was a bit shy at first, he's now happy and living it up at a new foster home.

"He's gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous,"Sara Anderson, large breed foster coordinator for the organization, told The Huffington Post. "I see nothing when I look at him but his handsome self."

Anderson told HuffPost that because of his condition, "Quasi" is unable to turn his head but is otherwise able to snuggle and play like any other canine companion. Though the dog is now getting much-needed care, he came to the rescue group with medical issues. The coordinator explained that he has wounds on his neck, likely from an embedded collar. He also arrived with a cautious attitude -- a bit wary of his new surroundings.

"He was very nervous when he arrived, he didn't want to come out of his crate," Anderson said.

However the nerves quickly went away with some the aid of snacks.

"It took him about 10 minutes and he was literally in my lap," she said. "He learns to trust very quickly!"

The pup has a resilient personality, according to Anderson, and doesn't let his condition affect his quality of life. In fact, he's quite the affectionate furry friend.

"He's very sweet, loves to give kisses and fits perfectly in a lap," she said.

As wonderful as Quasi is, he is not available for adoption just yet. He will be seen by a veterinarian, who will assess him, take care of his wounds and hopefully schedule him to be neutered as well.

The 5 Things You Should Do Before Leaving Your House Every Morning

By: Marina Komarovsky

Most morning routines are a simple function of maximizing the minutes you stay in bed, avoiding the stark truth that you have stuff to do, and minimizing the probability that, in the mad rush that ensues, you leave the house having forgotten your insulin pump or other life-sustaining gear you'll need. Usually food.

Unfortunately, looking around for healthy morning routines yields advice that involves buying a trampoline, fitting 22 activities into 30 minutes, or resigning yourself to the fact that not being a morning person dooms you to a sad life. Better news: if you're trying to spruce up your morning routine, there are only five things a normal person realistically needs to do before stumbling out of the house.

Get up the first time
Not only does hitting the snooze button repeatedly give you interrupted sleep that leaves you groggy and makes anyone sleeping next to you hate you, but it also gets you off to a pretty miserable start. As you drift in and out of sleep, terrifying things pop into your head: "No food in the fridge... texting that girl from last night... getting in early today for that call you completely forgot about... uuughhhh!"

Therapist Melissa Parks strongly advises against this approach: "That extra time in bed can lead your mind to wander and obsess and worry about everything you have going on that day." It might feel bad in the moment, but you'll wind up feeling worse if you lie there for an hour stuck between sleep and consciousness, dreading the day.

Avoid email
Not really the best advice in life these days, but doing it while you're still in bed is A) definitely going to take longer than you think and B) will also most likely make you freak out. "It's not your to-do list," writes productivity expert Sid Savara. Seriously -- those emails are the things that everyone else wants you to do, but for the first 5% of your day, they can go screw themselves. Never Check E-mail in the Morning is even the title of a real book by "Oprah's favorite organizing expert," so, yeah, what more do you need? You can recommend this approach to anyone who takes issue with your lack of timely responses first thing in the morning, but it's probably best to make this change on the sly.

Move your body
Sleep... or exercise... sleep... or exercise? If you're one of those motivated people who's going to skip out on a full hour of sleep to get into your workout clothes, get fit, and get showered, great, that makes one of us. Otherwise, you should give up on the idea of turning your morning routine into a killer ab workout.

All you need to do is take literally a few minutes to do something a little bit active. "Getting your blood pumping in the morning is a good kick start to your cardiovascular, respiratory, and... metabolic systems," says nutrition and fitness expert Juli Huddleston. The idea isn't to get in shape, but to get your body into gear. "Doesn't have to be much: a few jumping jacks, push-ups, sit-ups, walking the dog, or doing some stretches and yoga poses." If you can roll out of your bed and onto the floor for a stretch, congratulations! You're already getting somewhere.
