In the series, organization experts Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin take on a wide range of clients, from regular people to A-list celebrities like Reese Witherspoon (who is also the show’s executive producer). Yes, stars can be messy, too, and it’s fun to peek inside their homes to see just how bad it gets!

In the Season 1 premiere, ”Reese Witherspoon and a Doctor’s Dream Closet,” Teplin and Shearer head to Nashville, TN. There, they help Witherspoon organize her massive collection of red-carpet dresses and film costumes. Then they give a doctor named Whitney a much-needed closet revamp, too.
By the end, “The Home Edit” pros have tamed a whole lot of chaos—and divulged a bunch of advice that could help with your own space. Read on to learn some of their top organizing tips that can be applied to your own abode.
Divide your possessions in a way that makes sense

Witherspoon doesn’t want to only organize her costumes and gowns, she also wants to display them so she can reminisce easily.
“This is my dream, dream, dream project that you guys would come and help me organize my memorabilia from all my movies, my dresses, my clothes, my costumes, pictures, everything,” Witherspoon says.
Now that they know Witherspoon’s movies—and memories—are a guiding principle in this closet’s design, Teplin and Shearer know to keep certain collections together.
“Our house goals for Reese’s memorabilia closet,” Shearer says, “are to divide the closet into sections relating to her various wardrobe from movies, TV shows, her red-carpet moments.”
Adjust your shelves so everything fits

While Teplin and Shearer may be organization experts, their work takes some trial and error.
“We never know exactly what configuration we’re going to end up with,” Teplin says.
To that end, the pros takes their time rearranging shelves and moving Witherspoon’s clothes around until they find the right spot for everything.

“We just have to kind of test and try things out,” Shearer says. “It’s a moving Rubik’s Cube of a closet ,where you have to keep moving shelves and moving hanging rods.”
Get the right storage containers—and labels

Organization requires not just moving things around, but also finding the right containers to make everything look great.
“We’re going to do acrylic stacking jewelry boxes to hold all of her ‘Legally Blonde’ accessories and jewelry items,” Shearer explains.
They divide the bigger items into pretty blue boxes, which add some color to the closet. Then Shearer and Teplin top it all off with custom labels so Witherspoon will know which items go with which movie or awards show.
And in the end, Witherspoon is thrilled with the results.
“The closet is so gorgeous! They organized everything just perfectly,” she says. “All the labels and all the little drawers that hold every accessory that Elle Woods [from ‘Legally Blonde’] had—it’s a memorabilia paradise.”
Your organization system should suit your needs
With Witherspoon’s closet done, Teplin and Shearer move on to helping Whitney organize her closet. The first thing Teplin and Shearer do is ask Whitney how she uses her closet, since this will help them figure out what should go where.
“We don’t want to go against the grain,” Teplin tells Whitney. “We’re not trying to reconfigure your natural way of being. We just want to work with you and go with the tide.”
It’s a great goal because it doesn’t require Whitney to change anything in her daily routine, which means she’s probably more likely to maintain her newly organized closet when Teplin and Shearer leave.
Matching hangers can make a big difference
Whitney’s clothes may already be neatly hung, but Teplin and Shearer point out that the clothes still look messy due to Whitney’s mismatched hangers.
“Matching hangers will make everything in Dr. Whitney’s closet look extra polished,” Shearer says. “It’s really the most important product you can buy for your closet.”
Don’t keep things just because you have space

While organizing Whitney’s closet, Teplin and Shearer notice that this doctor has a lot of clutter. So, they ask if there’s anything she’d like to clear out of the space. Whitney ends up getting rid of some pairs of shoes, and she says it feels good to let them go.
As Shearer explains, “Just because you have the space, and she does, it doesn’t mean you need to fill it to its maximum capacity. Let things comfortably breathe.”
