That’s right—it’s a new year, and our decor is (appropriately) heading in a new direction, popping off loads of color and vibrancy. We’re nixing the neutrals and chasing away those winter blues with a big dose of bold.

1. Playful pastel kitchens

All-white kitchens have been falling out of favor for a while now, but the latest design trend truly swings toward the opposite of the design pendulum: pastel pink kitchens.
You can thank a resurgence in art deco style, which was all about “softness and sensuality,” says Gianna Marzella, principal and founder of GiaMar Interiors. “And the art deco style coincided with a time of economic growth in the United States—some theorize that these playful colors are a reflection of this sense of financial well-being.”

2. Sumptuous jewel-tone sofas

Sofas are also ditching their neutral hues this season, and coming in hot with sumptuous jewel tones that will make your living room fit for royalty.
“Emerald green and jewel tones in general are part of a 2020 trend we’re calling ‘Old World Minimalism,’” says Rebecca Breslin, design manager for Wayfair Professional. (In addition to rich jewel tones, Breslin says, Old World Minimalism includes black lacquer and 1940s silhouettes and materials.)
“Elevate the look [of an emerald-green couch] with velvet, a chesterfield silhouette, or complementary blue or purple throw pillows,” Breslin adds.

3. Baskets—on the walls!

Who says baskets are just for storage? Not top designers, who’ve started creating colorful arrangements of baskets on the walls this season.
“Baskets have moved up from the table to the wall, and it is a beautiful way to show artistry and bring color into a space,” says Kellie Smith, founder of SmithHönig. “The free-form arrangement can soften a room, and the woven texture brings interest and adds an element to the space that might not otherwise be included in a design.”
Whether it’s a single basket mixed with framed art or an entire wall dedicated to a collection, baskets add a unique touch to any space, Smith says.

4. Striking scalloped chairs

In another embrace of bold looks, funky scalloped chairs have entered the decor scene—and we might just be obsessed.
“With a subtle nod to the interiors of the ’80s,” Breslin says, “there’s a resurgence of rounded silhouettes, including scalloped chairs and pillows, to balance a more rigid overall structure in spaces.”

5. Verdant hanging gardens

Winter is long, which is just one of the reasons you’ll want to include this fresh pop of greenery in your home’s interior. We’ve seen these hanging gardens in recent trending bathroom designs, but now they seem to be popping up in just about every room of the house.
“There’s no denying the science that nature improves mood and health, and hanging gardens are becoming popular for this exact reason,” says Colin Haentjens, designer for The Knobs Company. “The texture, color, scent, and pattern of living plants can transform a sterile space into a livable one.”
