While movies offer an escape from our real lives (which is welcome now more than ever), they can also inspire us to remake our homes in their image. After all, films are brimming with gorgeous homes that are often much more than a mere backdrop, but swoon-worthy in their own right!

In honor of Valentine’s Day, we’re here to highlight some of the best bedrooms from the big screen. We also got decor experts to weigh in on what makes these iconic movie bedrooms such standouts, and how you can incorporate elements of their decor into your own bedroom—that way, your own sleeping space will feel more like a getaway than ever.

‘The Great Gatsby’

Warner Bros. Pictures

In this 2013 movie, Leonardo DiCaprio plays Jay Gatsby, whose riches are on full display throughout his Long Island mansion—but especially his bedroom. Over-the-top elegance graces pretty much every inch of this posh space that celebrates the glitz and glamour of the art deco era.

“It’s memorable for its refined tailoring, geometric figures and shapes, contrasting wood and metallic elements,” says Dayna Hairston, owner and interior designer at Dayziner LLC in New York. “The unmistakable harlequin patterns are a classic hallmark of this style.”

To incorporate the look in your own home on a smaller scale, she suggests looking for area rugs with harlequin patterns in a neutral color scheme, such as beige and cream. Chrome and steel were new materials in this time period, so consider replacing furniture hardware with sleek chrome knobs or pulls for a classic, refined look. Alternatively, add decorative items such as a chrome- and gold-framed mirror in repeated geometric shapes.

“Don’t underestimate the power of the details,” Hairston says. “Inlaid wood furniture pieces are great finds that capture the style of the era. Look for contrasting light and dark woods for added impact. Furniture during this time period was often oversized. Select large-scale, highly varnished or lacquered furniture. Mixing materials is the key to this style, such as wood with steel, black lacquer and gold, and incorporating reflective elements such as chrome, and glass mirrors.”

‘Sex and the City: The Movie’

HBO Studios

The first “Sex and the City” movie in 2008 shows Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) cavorting through New York City in cute outfits, but her sense of style also carries through to her apartment, too.

Collected, not cluttered, is the best way to describe this small space, which is achieved via classic fabrics, timeless furniture, and just the right statement color on the walls.

“The electric-blue walls are the perfect backdrop for the modern, white furniture pieces, a chic mirrored vanity, and side tables,” says Sara Arndt, a home stylist from Sioux Falls, SD.

In addition to choosing a bold color, which is a cheap and easy makeover anyone can try, a decor idea to steal is above the bed.

“The gallery wall is definitely the highlight of the room,” says Arndt. “It features drawings, paintings, vintage book pages, and fashion drawings.”

Choose whatever’s special to you to cop the same look.

‘Fifty Shades of Grey’

It doesn’t get much more memorable than the Red Room of Pain from this 2015 movie based on E.L. James‘ erotic book series. But even if you’re not into, well, whatever characters Christian and Ana are into, you still can glean some inspiration from this sanctuary to spice up your own boudoir.

“A monochromatic, moody red color, rich fabric, intricate patterns, brass details, and sleekly organized accessories create the mood in this naughty chic room,” says Arndt.

‘Pretty in Pink’

Paramount Pictures

All the angsty teens of the ’80s wanted nothing more than to curl up in Molly Ringwald‘s bedroom from this 1986 classic and hang out with her and Ducky. But how do you translate that early shabby-chic decor for an adult?

Hairston says the feeling of innocence and softness from the room can be incorporated into a grown-up room beautifully.

“Opt for a soft color palette of pale blush, rosy gold, and warm neutrals to create a feeling of lightness,” she says. “Add floral prints or fresh flower arrangements to add a layer of femininity. Hand-painting furniture with floral motifs is an ideal way of incorporating femininity into a space while repurposing existing furniture.”

The built-in cabinets and window seat are also great touches and can be incorporated into any style. If you’re not lucky enough to have a window seat, you can still achieve the look.

“The important aspect to consider is to create a space that is your own, where you can sit and reflect,” says Hairston, who suggests placing a comfortable upholstered chair by the window with a small side table to create your own reading nook. Add a knitted or lace throw for comfort and warmth, and adorn your windows with sheer panels or lace for an abundance of natural light and subtle texture. Angst is optional.

‘Quantum of Solace’

Columbia Pictures

Bond, James Bond, is all about modern minimalism. Granted, Bond travels the globe and sleeps only in hotels, but still, the sleeping spaces he frequents all have a chic allure, as is evident in this scene from the 2008 Bond film “Quantum of Solace.”

To get a similar look, Hairston says to remember less is more. Select only furniture that serves a purpose.

“What works best about Bond’s bedroom is its simplicity,” Hairston says. “The black and white bedroom is as incognito as he is.”

To achieve this look, place stronger, deeper colors in the back of the room. These items should be your functional pieces such as a dresser, nightstand, curtains, etc. Then place your lighter-toned elements in the room such as your bed and area rug.

The sharp contrast between light and dark colors will create a natural focal point. To keep the area crisp and modern, select furnishings with sharp, straight lines and angles to create emphasis and style among the simplicity.

‘Moulin Rouge’

20th Century Fox

The 2001 movie “Moulin Rouge!” stars a cabaret singer (Nicole Kidman) who has a bedroom that’s as dramatic as she is, with layers upon layers of fabrics. To create this vibe in your own space, don’t skimp on the window treatments, Hairston says, recommending drapery in refined materials such as silks and velvet.

“Select bedding materials with luxurious fabrics, and an abundance of pillows,” she says. “Opt for fabrics that have a light reflecting sheen for an added feeling of luxury. Look for global-inspired decor such as Moroccan lanterns, Turkish rugs, and tassels in a color-rich, deep-hued palette. Combine these with gilded furniture pieces or decorative items for maximum opulence.”

No matter which movie bedroom is your favorite, there’s decor inspiration to be had from just about any film. So pop some popcorn and keep your eyes peeled for decor details you’d like to adopt in your own sleeping space, too.
