Christina Anstead of “Flip or Flop” fame knows that the right design can help people kick back and relax at home. And in the latest episode of her new show, “Christina on the Coast,” she encounters clients who clearly need more Zen in their life, since they argue about every design decision they have to make.

On the “Wellness Remodel” episode, Anstead helps health expert Cara and her husband, Chris, redo their bedroom and bathroom. While Anstead presents them with some incredible designs, the couple can’t agree on much.

Laminate flooring can give your bathroom a real wood look

Anstead has big ideas for Chris and Cara’s new flooring. She suggests a light vinyl for the bathroom, explaining that it’ll look like real wood but will stand up well to water.

However, Cara is unsure, saying she imagined darker flooring. Still, she ends up agreeing to try Anstead’s design. Once the flooring is installed, Cara is surprised.

“I thought they were just going to feel and look like a barn,” she says, inspecting the floors, “but I love them.”

The floors bring some much-needed natural tones to the clean, modern bathroom. They look so great that Cara and Chis end up using the same flooring for the bedroom as well.

The one thing every bathroom needs: Spa vibes

Who doesn’t want a bathroom that feels like a spa? Anstead has a clever idea to help create that relaxing ambiance we all desire. She suggests putting hexagonal tile behind the mirrors and behind the bathtub.

“It’ll kind of give it a nice flow, and I think it’ll make the room feel even bigger,” Anstead explains.

Her clients aren’t sure at first, but once the tile is installed, it’s clear that Anstead’s suggestion was a good choice. The tile makes the bathroom feel like a relaxing oasis.

“I feel like I finally have a space to go retreat once the kids are down at night and unwind,” Cara says.

Shower tiles can have a completely different look depending on how they’re laid

Cara and Chris want to upgrade their shower, so Anstead presents some tile ideas. While both Chris and Cara like the white, geometric tile Anstead suggests, they can’t agree on whether to lay the tile horizontally or vertically.

When laid vertically, the tile looks modern and chic; when laid horizontally, the tile gives the shower a more classic look.

The couple argue over the tile until they end up testing the looks by putting up a few tiles in the shower. Together, they decide that Cara’s vertical version is better and, in the end, even Chris is happy with the result.

“I know I wanted horizontal,” Chris says as he studies the shower, “but it looks amazing.”

It’s clear that the vertical tile was the right choice—not only does it make the bathroom look modern, but it also makes the large shower seem even bigger.

A fireplace should make the right statement

Before: This fireplace served as a nice backdrop for Cara’s videos; however, it was a bit dated.

Chris and Cara have a beautiful fireplace in their bedroom, but the couple think it’s due for a refresh. Cara uses this fireplace as a backdrop for her wellness video tutorials, so she wants it to look picture-perfect.

While Cara wants to give the fireplace a stylish cement tile makeover, Chris says he prefers brick tile.

“It’s a little bit more simple,” Chris says of brick tile. ”I think cement tile can be really busy and maybe a little bit crazy.”

So, Chris, Cara, and Anstead end up going shopping for tile together, and each one chooses a favorite design. In the end, Chris and Cara choose the cement tile Anstead suggests.

Chris likes that it’s not too busy, and Cara loves how stylish it is. It seems that the tile is a perfect compromise.

“I love the tile,” Cara says. “Talk about a statement piece.”

Try shiplap in the bedroom for a rustic style

While Chris and Cara may disapprove of some of Anstead’s designs (and disagree with each other), they both love Anstead’s idea to put shiplap on one of the bedroom walls.

“Yes! I wanted shiplap so bad,” Cara says when Anstead suggests it.

In the finished bedroom, the shiplap looks clean, warm, and classic. It’s a perfect accent wall for this space and goes well with the stylish new fireplace and light floors.

Chris says the shiplap “ties everything together.”

Is Christina Anstead’s renovation up to snuff?

While one bedroom and bathroom may not seem like they would be a lot of trouble, a lot goes into this renovation. Between the new flooring, the tile choices, and the updated fireplace, there’s a lot to think about, and these choices are only made more difficult when Anstead’s clients don’t always agree with her—or each other.

Still, Anstead is able to create a beautiful suite for Chris and Cara. While the pair go slightly over their $55,000 budget, deciding to pay $2,500 to expand the shower, the expense is well worth it. Chris and Cara love their new space.

“Christina really nailed the design,” Cara says. “It’s a little surreal to have such an amazing space.”
