With autumn in full swing and the first holiday ads infiltrating your screens, you might be thinking about jazzing up your home with new accessories before any (cough, cough) winter guests come to stay. One way to change things up is to try different fabrics for your decor accents or upholstery.
Twill is one fabric making waves—or should we say weaves?—this season for its utility and rich texture. Recognizable by the thin, diagonal lines that run across the fabric (usually all in one direction), twill is showing up everywhere—on sofas, curtains, and even wallpaper.
“Twill weaves are trending because they are simple and timeless patterns that complement all kinds of design styles, making the simplicity of the pattern a very versatile fabric to work with,” explains Wendy Gonzalez, interior designer and founder of Modern Ornament in New Jersey.
What’s more? Twill fabrics tend to last, Gonzalez points out; cotton twill is especially popular for its durability. But if you’re feeling frisky, you can find twill in other styles—even velvet.
Do you have the will for twill? Here’s how to add this easy-to-care-for fabric to your home in time to cozy things up for winter.
Twill wallpaper
If you find paint a bit plain or just simply crave some texture in your home, twill wallpaper could be for you. Try this rich look in your hall bathroom, as an accent wall behind your bed, or in the dining room for a sophisticated touch.
What to buy:
- Alix twill wallpaper, $2.11/sq. foot, Brewster Wall Coverings
- Candice Olson sisal twill wallpaper, $280/roll, Calico
- Hazelip twill texture wallpaper, $1.71/sq. foot, Wayfair.com

Twill bedding
Move aside, heavy flannel winter sheets. Twill sheets are an upgrade you’ll want to make to all your bedding in the upcoming months. The unique weave makes them ultrasoft and warm like your favorite flannel shirt, but still lightweight and breathable to keep you comfortable at night.
What to buy:
- Bamboo twill sheets, from $119, Brooklyn Bedding

Herringbone twill accents
Gonzalez recommends looking for accessories in a herringbone twill pattern for a nice twist on the traditional weave. Opt for this pattern on accent pillows, floor cushions, and ottomans.
What to buy:
- McAlister herringbone twill pillow cover, $41, Amazon
- Urban ottoman, $500, West Elm

Twill curtains
If your drapery needs an upgrade, twill is a solid choice for a soft fabric. It’s easy to clean and won’t wrinkle easily, Gonzalez explains. Look for the material that works for you and your lifestyle, from easy-breezy cotton to a more dramatic twill velvet.
What to buy:
- Velvet twill curtains, from $81, Pottery Barn
- Brushed cotton twill drapery, from $195, Restoration Hardware

If you’re looking for upholstery fabric that can endure a never-ending slog of holiday guests, playful pets, and everyday wear and tear, twill is a smart choice, explains David Ewart, director and designer at Pavilion Broadway.
“Our favorite twill designs tend to be on sofa covers,” Ewart says. “When compared to many fabric and suede coverings, twill coverings tend to be the perfect choice for those with a young family or pets, where there is a lot of traffic and play around the house.”
What to buy:
- Eddy sofa in twill granite, from $999, West Elm
- Serta Furniture twill slip cover, from $114, Amazon.com
