If you keep up with decor trends, you probably already know that abstract and geometric patterns have recently made their way from modern art museums into our homes. This uber-mod look can now be seen everywhere, from our dining room art to our sofa throw pillows.
But the design world didn’t stop at hexagons and parallelograms. A new modern art print is worming its way into our decor this season: the squiggle.
You might be skeptical of this simplistic-seeming pattern at first glance. How can this childish-looking doodle be considered en vogue? But designers say the squiggle actually brings a stylish touch—a modern twist on a bygone era.
“Everything ’80s is back,” explains Justin Riordan, designer and founder of Spade and Archer Design Agency, in Portland, OR. “Remember curly phone cords? The squiggle is simply the curly phone cord with a 2019 rebrand.”
But a note of caution: As you can imagine, this is one trend that looks best in small doses, says Riordan.
“When incorporating squiggles into your decor, just keep it subtle and simple,” he says. “An entire room in this would be downright obnoxious, but a throw pillow or curtain with a sassy squiggle will inspire delight. Find that right balance, and you will do just fine.”
Here’s how to doodle the squiggle all over your home—in the chicest way possible.
Squiggle artwork
This is the easiest way to incorporate squiggles into your home. When you hang some uber-cool squiggle art in your living room, dining room, or baby’s nursery, it’s sure to be a conversation piece.
“My 4-year-old could have drawn that,” your friends will say. But they didn’t.
And you’ll know the real truth: Your squiggles make for chic modern art.

Squiggle and scribble drapery
Who says curtains have to be solid and plain all the time?
Riordan recommends some squiggle drapery in colors that accent the rest of the room. Gray or navy with white, for example, can add a pop to any room without overpowering the decor.

Pillows and bedding with squiggles
For a mod update to your bedding and throw pillows, try looking for some textiles with a colorful squiggle pattern.
If you’re really bold, you can lock in the look with multiple colors and pretend you sleep in a bed of sprinkles—that’s guaranteed to bring some cheeriness to any room, right? Or, go for black and white squiggles to emulate a classic “Art 101” look.

Furniture featuring squiggles
Squiggles can be a fun addition to your furniture, too. Just remember that these are meant to be showstoppers or accent pieces—you don’t need a lot of them to make a statement. One side table or patterned chair will add some personality to your space.

- Squiggle pattern sling chair, $149, Society6
- Squiggle coffee table, $693, My Swanky Home
