Drew and Jonathan Scott are experts at designing homes so comfortable, its inhabitants never want to leave. In fact, that’s kind of the point of their current show, “Property Brothers: Forever Home,” where they remodel houses so their owners can stay put indefinitely.
All of this seems particularly relevant right now, with the novel coronavirus having so many of us cooped up inside.
And in the latest episode, “Everyone’s Welcome,” we can see that having a peaceful home interior is particularly important when you have kids, whose toys and general messiness can cause chaos right when calm serenity is needed more than ever.
Michelle and Gopi want to redesign the living area to make it friendlier for entertaining. They want to add a great dining space, a welcoming kitchen, and a living room that doesn’t look like a kid’s playpen.
Can the Scott brothers help this family home look a little more grown-up? Read on to find out how they pull it off, and learn some improvements that could work to make your own home more livable for the long (and short) run, too.
A blue backsplash brightens a kitchen

Kitchen backsplashes come in all colors, shapes, and styles. Some muted backsplashes blend into a kitchen and let the counter or cabinets pop. Meanwhile, other loud, patterned tiles make a statement.
The tile Drew and Jonathan choose for Michelle and Gopi’s backsplash is a little bit of both. It’s understated and elegant, but also unique. The tile is light blue, which brings a lot of light to the kitchen without making the space stark-white. Plus, this tile has a washboard texture, which brings some beautiful texture to the space.
When Michelle and Gopi finally see their home, Gopi points out how much he loves the tile choice.
“I’m so impressed with it,” he says.
Colorful storage makes the kitchen pop

With a bright backsplash and white cabinets, this kitchen needs some darker tones to break up the space. So, Drew and Jonathan decide to give the cabinets on the large peninsula a moody, deep-blue hue. They also give the cupboards and bar area a matching makeover with the same color.
Not only does this rich color bring some personality to this large kitchen, it also shows off Michelle and Gopi’s party-size kitchen storage.
Dark wood floors are dramatic
Drew and Jonathan know that light floors are great for making a small space look brighter and larger. But in a big house like Gopi and Michelle’s, they can afford to put down a darker flooring throughout the first floor.
The darker laminate they choose makes for a perfect contrast to the light and bright kitchen. Plus, it brings some extra dimension to the dining and living rooms.
However, the new flooring is probably most appreciated in the home’s entryway. Drew and Jonathan replace the basic white tile near the front door with the new flooring, and the result is perfect.
Not only does the consistent flooring give the house a good flow, its dark hue also makes the entryway look dramatic right as guests walk through the front door.
Dedicated dining rooms are back

For years, people have been giving up those stuffy formal dining rooms in favor of a larger kitchen or living room. But Michelle and Gopi decide to do just the opposite: They want to turn their second living space into a dining room that’s perfect for dinner parties.

They know they want to do more entertaining, and a modern dining room, with a hip light fixture and a beautiful table, is perfect for some more mature gatherings.
Adding this dining room turns out to be the right choice, as they’ll be able to enjoy this beautiful space for years to come.
Add a bonus sitting space (with storage!)

To make that dining room even more amazing, the brothers add a sitting space by the window. It’s a beautiful addition that gives the room a cozy, homey feel. Of course, Michelle loves it.
“My entire life I’ve dreamed of having a window seat for reading,” Michelle says, curling up on the cushion.
Not only is it a perfect place for reading, those drawers underneath also make it a perfect place to store books, games, or whatever this family needs.
A kid’s playroom doesn’t have to be overrun with toys

Michelle and Gopi admit that their daughter, Gaby, may have taken over the front living room, and the brothers agree once they see the mountain of toys and games within. Of course, Gopi and Michelle like making sure Gaby has a designated space to play, but they hate knowing that their guests see a toddler’s playroom when they first walk in the house.

So the brothers give the room a makeover. They put in a large, cozy couch and some grown-up, built-in shelves. The room is still a perfect place for Gaby to play, but with all that storage in the built-ins, there’s plenty of room to hide her toys when company comes over.
Do the Scott brothers deliver?
Gopi and Michelle had given Drew and Jonathan a healthy $175,000 budget. Even after running into some trouble with a leaky master bathroom shower, Drew and Jonathan manage to finish up the renovation at just $171,000.
The Scotts do an amazing job transforming this cluttered, chaotic house into a forever home. With a comfortable sitting room, a welcoming kitchen, and an intimate dining room, Gopi and Michelle might just have a hard time getting their guests to leave!
So while hosting large gatherings may not be in the cards for many of us right now, it never hurts to renovate for the day you can, right?
