Drew and Jonathan Scott are used to opening up cramped spaces, but when their latest client on “Property Brothers: Forever Home” says she wants the house to be big enough for her, her teenagers, and all their friends, it’s clear that she might be dreaming too big for her small space. Or is she?
On the “Changing It Up for Teenagers” episode, Tamara is a single mom of two teenagers, Carl and Maddy. She works hard taking care of her kids, and recently even got herself through graduate school. And now this accomplished mom is hoping to make her home more comfortable.
“The big issue in the space is, it’s just too cramped,” says Tamara, explaining that she wants her kids to feel comfortable bringing friends over.
Can the Scott brothers help Tamara find more room in her family’s forever home? Read on to find out if they can make this small space seem larger, and to learn some of their tips for making a home more guest-friendly.
Mix up colors and textures for an interesting space
Originally, the living room isn’t very interesting to look at. When the brothers first tour the space, they see a cramped room with some furniture. It simply isn’t inviting. So Drew and Jonathan decide to give Tamara and her kids some new blue and white furniture with gold accents.
“I love the gold,” Tamara says. “I love the mixed metals.”
But that’s not all. While the colorful palette provides some interesting contrast, it’s the textures that really pull it together. Tamara notices a feathered wall hanging and fluffy pillows on the couch first.
“I love the contrast and the different textures on the couch,” she says. “It makes me want to touch everything.”
Jonathan agrees, saying, “This is definitely a pettable couch.”
A marble fireplace can warm up a room
A living room should be warm and cozy, so when Tamara explains that she had a fireplace growing up and has fond memories of lighting it on Christmas, the brothers know they have to check off this one item on her wish list. They install a sleek and beautiful fireplace with a marble face that’s modern and fits perfectly in the living room.
When the brothers are done, the fireplace truly brightens up the space. Best of all, Tamara loves it.
“It’s amazing,” she says when she sees it.
Install nice shelves to show off decor
When Drew and Jonathan first tour Tamara’s house, they’re disappointed in her display cases. Next to their small dining table is a simple bookshelf, and it doesn’t look great.
Tamara is a talented glass artist, and she makes incredible pieces that deserve to be shown off the right way. So the brothers build some wood shelves in the living room to show off her work. The pieces look beautiful on these prominent shelves.
Not every room needs a full renovation
During renovation, not every room needs a big change. This is exactly the case when it comes to Tamara’s guest bathroom. It’s in a good spot, next to the door, and while it’s small, it has good bones.
“We just have to make it prettier,” Jonathan says about this half-bath. “So new wallpaper, new flooring, new finishes, and, all of a sudden, lots of impact.”
He opts for blue wallpaper, new white tile, and a much improved vanity. While the room didn’t need much work, these changes make the bathroom look so much better. Of course, Tamara loves the colors and says the new floors make the space feel much bigger.
“It’s not a cave anymore,” she says.
Fewer walls means less storage
The brothers love busting down kitchen walls.
While homes were once designed to close off the kitchen, families these days want an open plan with clear sightlines from the kitchen to the living area.
The only problem is that less wall space often means less storage—but not this time.
The Scotts know that Tamara needs lots of storage, especially with two teens in the house. So while they take down part of a wall, they leave up another section so that they can install cabinets. The space is open enough so that the kitchen and dining room are connected, but not so much that there’s nowhere for a pantry. It’s a great compromise.
Don’t forget to furnish your outdoor space
To help make the space feel bigger, the brothers spruce up the backyard by power-washing the patio and adding some comfortable furniture. It’s a great look, and with this patio being right off the kitchen, this space can make for some great indoor-outdoor living.
So, do the Scott brothers deliver?
This renovation is important to Tamara, who just wants to help her kids feel comfortable in their home. In the end, the Scotts are able to create a beautiful space that’s modern, welcoming, and spacious for the kids and their friends to spread out.
And, they manage to accomplish all that on the $60,000 budget Tamara provides to fix up the powder room, living room, dining room, and kitchen.
In the end, Drew and Jonathan give this deserving family the forever home of their dreams.
